Salem Moravians' Receipts and Rituals

This is the first-ever published recipe compilation from documents housed within the Moravian Archives in Winston-Salem, NC. Featuring authentic 18th and 19th century Moravian recipes, this book offers a captivating glimpse into the culinary and Christian heritage and the daily details of those behind the honored events that continue in the 21st century.

Salem "Sisters" kept and continually added to their "receipt books." Now the author has carefully gathered their original work into this compendium of traditional recipes, household formulas and cleaning tips, etiquette rules, and other information. These converge into an inclusive vignette of home, church, and community within the historic settlement of Salem. Along with slices of history about Moravian customs there are sprinklings of lively, long-ago quotes. Also on hand is a glossary, conversion tables, a resource list, an index, and a bibliography about Southern foodways and early American housekeeping.

Moravians enjoy a past steeped in devout rituals, and the denomination is preserved by a love just as vibrant. Both love and tradition were passed from one generation to the next in the simple but essential observance of sharing meals together, not only as a family but also as a congregation. Preserving the Past is a tribute to their legacy. A portion of the proceeds from each book sold is donated to the Moravian Archives.
